Steps

  1. Survey the site for overhead power lines before rigging up or raising the mast
  2. Determine line voltage (contact the utility if unknown) to identify which clearance option under 29 CFR 1926.1408 applies
  3. Maintain minimum clearance for the mast, boom, and any part of the equipment or load (10 feet for lines at or below 50kV under one compliance option, or the greater distance specified in Table A for higher voltages)
  4. Post a dedicated spotter when work must occur near the clearance boundary
  5. Treat rain, fog, or dust as reducing effective safe distance and increase clearance accordingly
