Determine the required power line clearance under 29 CFR 1926.1408 (Table A) before operating equipment near energized lines

Steps

  1. Confirm the power line's voltage before beginning work; if voltage cannot be confirmed, treat it at the highest voltage reasonably expected per the standard
  2. Use the current Table A in 1926.1408 on osha.gov to determine the minimum clearance distance for that voltage, or evaluate an alternative compliance option (e.g., a table based on insulating link/device use, or encroachment prevention measures) the standard allows
  3. Erect and maintain an elevated warning line, barricade, or line of signs visible to the operator at the minimum approach distance when using the Table A option
  4. Confirm whether any part of the equipment, load line, or load could come closer than the minimum clearance distance under all working conditions, not just the nominal position
  5. If work must occur closer than the Table A clearance, follow the separate requirements in 1926.1410 for equipment operations closer than the Table A zone rather than proceeding under 1926.1408 alone
