Confirm the target station has air_gap data by checking the Metadata API station type list (type=airgap).
Call the Data API with product=air_gap for that station, specifying date range, units, and time_zone.
Read the returned clearance value (distance between current water surface and the fixed structure).
Compare against the vessel's air draft (mast/antenna height) plus a safety margin.
Re-check close to transit time since air gap changes continuously with the tide.
Known gotchas
Air-gap sensors are only installed at a limited number of PORTS-affiliated stations near specific bridges/power lines — most marinas will not have one nearby; verify coverage before relying on this route.
This measures clearance at the sensor location only, not necessarily at the exact bridge/point of transit — confirm the sensor's documented location matches the hazard in question.
