  1. Confirm the target station has air_gap data by checking the Metadata API station type list (type=airgap).
  2. Call the Data API with product=air_gap for that station, specifying date range, units, and time_zone.
  3. Read the returned clearance value (distance between current water surface and the fixed structure).
  4. Compare against the vessel's air draft (mast/antenna height) plus a safety margin.
  5. Re-check close to transit time since air gap changes continuously with the tide.
