Steps
Notify the AHJ in advance of the scheduled acceptance test so they can witness it, per standard NFPA 110 practice.
Perform the cold-start acceptance test: simulate loss of normal power with the emergency load at typical operating level and record startup/transfer parameters against the applicable class/level table.
Conduct the full-load test at 100% of the system's kW rating for a 2-hour duration, recording operating parameters at regular intervals.
Verify transfer switch operation, time-to-power, and any required selective coordination or load-shedding sequence during the test.
Compile the acceptance test report as the basis for AHJ sign-off/commissioning of the emergency power system.
Known gotchas
Skipping AHJ notification before the test can force a re-test — build the witnessed-test scheduling into the project timeline, not as an afterthought.
A system that passes a light-load start test but hasn't been proven at the full 2-hour, 100%-load test is not NFPA 110 acceptance-tested — don't shortcut the duration or load level.
