Steps
Confirm the applicable standard — ASTM D1212 (wet film thickness gauges) — and current edition on store.astm.org
Select a notch gauge or wheel gauge appropriate to the wet coating's expected thickness range
Take wet film readings immediately after application, before the coating begins to flash off or cure, since solvent loss changes the reading rapidly
Convert expected DFT using the coating's percent-volume-solids figure from its technical data sheet (WFT × %volume solids ÷ 100 ≈ predicted DFT)
Cross-check predicted DFT against actual cured DFT (SSPC-PA 2) once the coating has fully dried, and adjust application technique if there is a persistent gap
Known gotchas
WFT readings are only a real-time process-control tool — they are not an acceptance criterion; final acceptance is based on cured DFT
High-solvent coatings show much greater WFT-to-DFT shrinkage than high-solids coatings; using one conversion factor across different products is a common estimating error
