Steps
Verify gauge accuracy against certified shims/coated standards at the start and end of every work shift per ASTM D7091 procedures
Send the gauge to the manufacturer, an authorized agent, or an accredited calibration lab for full calibration on the manufacturer-specified interval (commonly annual) with NIST-traceable certification
Adjust/zero the gauge on an uncoated area of the actual substrate, or an equivalent base metal, before taking measurements since base metal affects readings
Re-verify accuracy whenever substrate material, curvature, or measurement environment changes significantly during a job
Keep calibration and shift-verification records separately to support downstream DFT conformance documentation
Known gotchas
Shift-start/end shim verification is not the same as full calibration — both are required, and conflating them is a common documentation failure
Zeroing on a different substrate type than the production parts produces unreliable readings on that job
