Steps
Confirm the current edition — SSPC-PA 2-2022, 'Procedure for Determining Conformance to Dry Coating Thickness Requirements,' now published under AMPP — and check content.ampp.org/store.ampp.org for any later reissue before citing an edition year
Calibrate the magnetic/eddy-current gauge on certified shims matching the expected substrate and coating range before starting readings
Apply the standard's spot/gauge-reading hierarchy: multiple gauge readings average to one spot reading, multiple spot readings average to one area reading
Compare area averages against the specified DFT range using the standard's allowable tolerance logic (not a simple pass/fail on every single reading)
Document readings and any Table/Appendix option elected by the spec (PA 2 offers alternative acceptance procedures the specifier must choose)
Known gotchas
SSPC-PA 2 is a procedure for determining conformance, not a thickness spec itself — the actual DFT range always comes from the coating manufacturer or project specification
Using an uncalibrated gauge or skipping the shim check on a curved/edge substrate is the most common source of disputed DFT data
