Steps
Determine the required SFRM thickness from the applicable UL/Intertek fire-resistance design (e.g., a BXUV design) for the specific structural member and restrained/unrestrained condition.
Perform in-place thickness testing per ASTM E605 (e.g., the pin-penetration method for field use) at the required sampling frequency and locations across beams, columns, and deck.
Extract and test density samples per E605's core-sample method where density verification is required, comparing results against the design's minimum density.
Document individual member/location results against the required thickness/density, flagging any under-thickness areas for build-up before close-out.
Sequence thickness/density testing after adequate cure time and before the SFRM is covered by ceilings, ductwork, or other trades.
