Steps
Verify all mechanical connections (fuel, exhaust, cooling) and electrical connections (generator output, ATS wiring, battery/starting circuit) before first start.
Perform initial startup per the manufacturer's start-up procedure, checking voltage, frequency, and oil pressure/coolant temperature stabilization.
Configure the automatic exercise cycle (day/time and duration) in the generator controller per manufacturer instructions and any applicable NFPA 110 exercise requirements for the system's classification.
Verify ATS transfer and retransfer operation (utility-loss simulation and restoration) functions correctly and within the time required for the system's classification.
Record commissioning results (voltage, frequency, transfer times, load carried) in a startup report retained for the owner and AHJ.
Known gotchas
An exercise cycle configured but never verified to actually run under load can mask a fuel-delivery or starting-battery problem until a real outage — confirm at least one load-bearing exercise event before calling the job complete.
Commissioning documentation is often the first thing an AHJ or insurer asks for after a system failure — treat the startup report as a permanent project record, not paperwork to discard.
