Steps

  1. Where columns are not framed in at least two directions with solid-web structural steel, field-bolt the joist at the column and provide a vertical stabilizer plate (minimum 6x6 inches, extending at least 3 inches below the joist's bottom chord) per 1926.757(a).
  2. Do not release hoisting cables from a joist until the seat at each end is field-bolted and each end's bottom chord is restrained by the column stabilizer plate, per 1926.757(a).
  3. Check the joist span against the bridging tables in 1926.757 (Tables A and B); install and anchor all bolted diagonal erection bridging before releasing hoisting cables when the span meets or exceeds the applicable table threshold.
  4. For spans over 100 feet through 144 feet, limit personnel on the joist to no more than two employees until bridging is fully installed and anchored, per 1926.757(c).
  5. For steel joist/joist-girder spans over 144 feet, erect using the structural steel erection methods of 1926.756 rather than the joist-specific rules.
