Steps

  1. Deck over all roof and floor holes and openings as decking is installed; where size, configuration, or design prevents decking over (elevator shafts, stairwells), protect employees per 1926.760(a) instead.
  2. When holes are cut into decking, immediately fill them with the intended equipment/structure or cover them — never leave a cut opening unprotected, even briefly.
  3. Ensure covers can support, without failure, twice the weight of employees, equipment, and materials that may be imposed at any one time, and secure covers against displacement by wind, equipment, or employees, per 1926.754(e).
  4. Mark or paint all covers with high-visibility paint or the word 'HOLE' or 'COVER' so the hazard is visible to other trades, per 1926.754(e).
  5. For framed metal deck openings, confirm structural members are turned down to allow continuous deck installation unless structural design or constructibility prevents it.
