Steps

  1. Confirm on osha.gov that 1910.1200(f)(8) provides a workplace labeling exemption for portable/secondary containers only when the diluted product is transferred from a labeled container and is intended solely for the immediate use of the employee who performs the transfer, and used within the same work shift.
  2. For any secondary container that will be used by someone other than the person who filled it, or kept beyond the immediate shift, apply a compliant workplace label with product identity and appropriate hazard information (a GHS pictogram/signal-word label or an equivalent in-house labeling system referencing the SDS).
  3. Standardize spray bottles and dilution-tank labeling across all sites so labels remain legible, are chemical-resistant, and are not obscured by dilution residue.
  4. Train staff never to leave secondary containers unlabeled 'just for today' and never to reuse a labeled bottle for a different chemical without relabeling.
  5. Periodically audit job sites for unlabeled or mislabeled secondary containers as part of routine safety walk-throughs.
