Steps

  1. Install perimeter safety cables at both the final interior and exterior perimeters of each floor as soon as the metal decking has been installed on that floor, per 1926.760(a).
  2. Confirm perimeter columns were fabricated with holes or other attachment devices at 42-45 inches above the finished floor and at the midpoint between the finished floor and the top cable, to allow quick cable installation.
  3. Ensure the installed cable system meets the guardrail criteria in 1926.502 (referenced via Subpart R Appendix G), including top rail height and strength requirements.
  4. Coordinate the cable installation crew's schedule tightly with decking progress so cables go up promptly rather than after a schedule delay.
  5. Where constructibility does not allow the pre-drilled holes/attachments on perimeter columns, document the design exception with the structural engineer of record.
