Steps
Confirm the dockboard supports the maximum intended load per 1910.22(b).
For dockboards placed into service on or after January 17, 2017, ensure edge run-off protection is present unless no hazard is demonstrated.
Secure portable dockboards by anchoring them or using devices that prevent slippage; if securing is infeasible, ensure sufficient surface contact to hold position.
Use wheel chocks or sand shoes to prevent the transport vehicle from moving while employees are on the dockboard.
Provide handholds or other effective means on portable dockboards to permit safe handling.
Known gotchas
Don't confuse 1910.26 (Dockboards, general industry) with 1917.124 (Dockboards - maritime) or 1910.30 (general training requirements) - they are distinct standards.
The run-off protection requirement applies specifically to dockboards put into initial service on or after January 17, 2017.
