Steps
For material chutes angled more than 45° from horizontal, fully enclose the chute except for loading openings at/near floor level, and keep openings closed at stories below the top floor when not in use.
Install a substantial gate near the chute's discharge end and assign a competent employee to control it and manage truck loading/backing at the discharge point.
Secure the discharge area when the chute is not in active use, and protect any chute opening where workers dump debris with a guardrail approximately 42 inches above the standing surface.
For wall/masonry removal, ensure no wall section taller than one story is left standing without lateral bracing unless it was originally designed to be self-supporting and confirmed structurally safe.
Leave all walls in a stable condition at the end of every shift, and solidly plank floor openings within 10 feet of a wall being demolished unless employees are excluded from the area below, per 1926.854.
