Confirm the current ES-1 edition — re-approved as an American National Standard in November 2022 as ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1 — and download it from spri.org/standards
Confirm ES-1 is referenced by the applicable IBC edition (referenced in IBC 2024) and by the local AHJ as a mandatory test requirement for perimeter edge-metal systems
Identify which edge conditions ES-1 covers (embedded edge metal, metal fascia, metal coping) — note ES-1 explicitly does NOT apply to gutters
Determine the required edge-metal wind resistance from the project's calculated ASCE 7 perimeter/corner zone pressures and confirm the specified edge system has ES-1 test data covering that pressure
Obtain manufacturer ES-1 test documentation/certification for the specific edge-metal profile, fastener spacing, and cleat gauge being installed — not just a general product line claim
Known gotchas
ES-1 test data is specific to the tested profile, gauge, fastener type/spacing and cleat height — a different gauge or fastener spacing than what was tested is not covered by the manufacturer's ES-1 documentation
Shop-fabricated (non-proprietary) edge metal is not automatically ES-1 compliant; NRCA's shop-fabricated edge metal testing guidance should be consulted if using a fabricator's custom profile rather than a tested proprietary system
ES-1 addresses edge-metal wind resistance specifically — it does not by itself satisfy the full-roof wind-uplift rating requirement for the membrane/insulation assembly
