Check the state DOT's approved WMA technology list where one exists (e.g., Caltrans maintains its own WMA Technologies approval list and evaluation process).
If no state-specific approval list exists, reference the FHWA/NAPA Warm Mix Asphalt Technical Working Group's generic guide specification as a baseline, adapting to the project spec.
Set production mixing and field compaction temperatures 30–120°F below standard HMA per the specific technology's documented range.
Verify rollers and compaction pattern are adjusted for the lower working temperature so target Gmm/density is still achieved.
Log temperature readings throughout production and paving as part of the QC record.
Known gotchas
A WMA technology approved in one state is not automatically approved in another — some agencies (e.g., Caltrans) run their own separate technology evaluation/approval process.
Lower production temperatures can mask inadequate compaction effort if rollers aren't adjusted for the technology, so density QC must still independently confirm target density rather than assuming lower temps are automatically 'fine.'
