Steps

1. Set up the extension ladder at the proper angle, extending at least 3 feet above the roof eave/landing point, and secure it against slipping before use.
2. Recognize that roof brackets/slide guards function as a work platform for footing, not as OSHA-compliant fall protection on their own for residential work covered by 1926.501(b)(13); pair them with a guardrail system, safety net, or personal fall arrest system as the primary fall protection.
3. If using roof brackets, install them per the bracket manufacturer's load rating and spacing instructions, and relocate them as work progresses without leaving gaps in the overall fall-protection coverage.
4. For personal fall arrest systems used alongside bracket/ladder work, confirm the anchor point rating, proper harness fit, and rope/lanyard length limiting free fall per OSHA and manufacturer requirements.
5. Inspect ladder, brackets, and fall-arrest equipment for damage before each use and remove damaged equipment from service.
