Steps
Confirm assembly type (double check valve assembly, double check detector assembly, RP, or RPDA) since test procedures and criteria differ by type
Perform the forward-flow test to verify the assembly delivers the system's required demand flow and pressure, in addition to the standard cross-connection differential-pressure certification test
Coordinate scheduling and test method with the local water purveyor/cross-connection control program, since the utility's annual backflow certification and the fire-flow demand test are often separate requirements enforced by different authorities
Record results comparing flowed pressure/flow to the original hydraulic design demand for the fire protection system
Report any failure to meet fire-flow demand to the owner/AHJ as a potential impairment of the water supply, independent of whether the assembly still passes its standard backflow certification
Known gotchas
Passing the water utility's annual backflow certification (valve seating/differential pressure) does NOT confirm the assembly can pass the required fire-system demand flow -- these are two different tests enforced by two different authorities and are commonly conflated
Detector assemblies (DCDA/RPDA) have a bypass meter that must also be checked for excessive friction loss at fire-flow rates -- an undersized bypass can throttle flow even when the main assembly tests fine
A generic cross-connection tester without fire-flow demand testing experience/equipment can produce a result that satisfies the water utility while leaving the fire-flow adequacy unverified
