Steps
Add SoftwareApplication (or the more specific MobileApplication/WebApplication) JSON-LD with required properties: name, operatingSystem, applicationCategory, and either aggregateRating or offers
Populate aggregateRating with ratingValue and ratingCount/reviewCount only when the app has genuine user ratings to display
Populate offers with price and priceCurrency for paid or freemium apps
Validate with the Rich Results Test, and co-type any VideoGame item with SoftwareApplication (or a similar type), since VideoGame alone is excluded from the rich result
Use Google's recognized applicationCategory values rather than inventing custom category strings
Known gotchas
Google requires either aggregateRating or offers, not neither — a page with just a name/description won't qualify for the rich result
Fabricated or inflated ratingCount/ratingValue violates general structured-data policy and can trigger a manual action, not just a missed rich result
A bare VideoGame type is explicitly excluded from the rich result even with all other fields present; it must be combined with SoftwareApplication or a similar type
