Steps

  1. Confirm which installer track applies: Fluid Applied & Self-Adhered Materials (non-SPF) or Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) & Self-Adhered Materials — prerequisites differ and the ABAA office must sign off on eligibility before the exam.
  2. Document hours: the non-SPF track requires a minimum of 3,000 hours of experience in air-barrier applications or related fields; the SPF track also requires a minimum of 3,000 hours of air-barrier/related experience, of which at least 1,500 hours must be direct SPF application experience (verified on airbarrier.org's Installer Training page, 2026-07-14).
  3. Related-trade hours toward the total can include spray-applied waterproofing, sheet membrane waterproofing, self-adhered membrane roofing, torch-applied membrane roofing, and painting; these are weighted and reviewed case-by-case by the ABAA office.
  4. Register for and complete the 2.5-day ABAA Installer Training Course (in-person or online), covering the three classroom modules — air-barrier principles/codes/ethics, testing/audit/documentation procedure, and building-enclosure overview — plus a hands-on practical portion on a job site or mock-up observed by an authorized ABAA representative.
  5. Pass the certification exam with a minimum 80% average grade and submit all required documentation (experience-hour verification, attendance records) to ABAA to receive the attendance/exam-results letter and certificate.
  6. Enroll qualifying projects in ABAA's Quality Assurance Program (QAP) so installations are independently checked via third-party field audits — QAP participation is a separate accreditation layered on top of individual installer certification.
