Steps

Attend the ABAA training course matching your track: Fluid Applied & Self-Adhered Materials, or Spray Polyurethane Foams & Self-Adhered Materials.
Confirm you meet the field-experience minimum for your track: 3,000 hours of experience in air barrier applications or related fields for the Fluid Applied & Self-Adhered track; or 1,500 hours in air barrier applications/related fields plus a separate 1,500 hours specifically in spray polyurethane foam application for the SPF track.
Sit the written exam and achieve a passing grade above 80%.
Complete and notarize the Installer Certification Application, the Installer Licensing Agreement, and the relevant Affidavit (Spray Foam, or Fluid Applied and Self-Adhered) documenting your hours.
Submit a plain-background digital headshot (no sunglasses, goggles, or hats).
Submit all documentation with the course, exam, and certification fees to ABAA for review.

Known gotchas

ABAA accepts related experience (spray-applied waterproofing, sheet membrane waterproofing, self-adhered membrane roofing, torch-applied membrane roofing, and painting) but hours in each category are weighted and reviewed case by case by the ABAA office, not credited 1:1.
The two tracks have different hour structures: the SPF track requires two separate 1,500-hour minimums (general air barrier/related-field experience and SPF-specific experience), not a single 3,000-hour pool split proportionally — don't apply one track's structure to the other.
Certification is non-transferable.
