Steps
Use the National Board's public search (nationalboard.org) to look up active Certificates of Authorization (R, VR, NR stamps) or manufacturer/assembler capacity certifications.
Search by company name, National Board number, or location depending on what you're verifying (a manufacturer stamp vs. a repair organization's R-stamp).
Cross-check the certificate type against what your job actually requires — R (repair), VR (pressure-relief-valve repair), and NR (nuclear) are distinct authorizations.
Confirm the listing shows active status; the directory only reflects currently valid authorizations, not historical ones.
For discrepancies, contact the National Board directly (614-888-8320) rather than relying solely on the online listing for a disputed job.
Known gotchas
National Board organizational registration is a separate lookup from an individual Commissioned Inspector's status — don't assume one search tool covers both.
Don't confuse National Board registration with ASME Certificate of Authorization status — a shop typically needs both for stamped vessels, and they're verified in two separate directories (nationalboard.org and asme.org).
