Steps
Confirm platform height will not exceed 20 feet.
Use ladders meeting Subpart X (Stairways and Ladders) requirements; never use a job-made ladder to support a ladder jack.
Confirm the ladder jack bears on both side rails and rungs, or on rungs alone with at least 10 inches of bearing per rung.
Secure ladders against slipping (fasten, tie off, or use anti-slip devices).
Do not bridge platforms between separate ladder jack scaffolds.
Confirm the platform is at least 12 inches wide.
Known gotchas
A job-made (site-built) ladder is explicitly disallowed for supporting a ladder jack scaffold, even though job-made ladders are permitted for other general access uses.
The 20-foot height cap is absolute for this scaffold type -- taller work requires a different scaffold type entirely.
