2. Use a contractor who is a certified FORTIFIED roofing contractor for the applicable region, since the current standard requires installer certification, not just product compliance.
3. Determine whether the project qualifies for a 'new roof' designation (new/sound sheathing, full roof replacement, generally valid only for a limited window after installation) versus an 'existing roof' designation (no re-roof, roof has substantial remaining service life and no visible damage) — these have different documentation paths.
4. Photograph and document each concealed step before it is covered (deck attachment/re-nailing, sealed-deck/underlayment application, edge and ridge details, attachment methods) per the current documentation checklist, since IBHS requires proof of compliance before materials conceal the work.
5. Submit the completed documentation package through the FORTIFIED evaluator process for the state/insurer program being used, and confirm designation before relying on it for an insurance premium credit, since some insurers key discounts to a completed and verified designation rather than a self-attested checklist.
