Steps
Use ANSI/ESD STM97.1 to test the resistance-to-ground of the actual floor/footwear/person combination — this is the measurement referenced by the S20.20 program standard.
Use ANSI/ESD STM97.2 to test peak body voltage generation of the same floor/footwear/person combination, since S20.20 requires keeping peak voltage under its specified threshold.
Test the actual footwear the facility issues or requires, not the flooring in isolation — both methods evaluate footwear and flooring as a combined system.
Retest periodically per the facility's ESD control program, since flooring wear, surface contamination, and ambient humidity changes can shift resistance/voltage results over time.
Verify current edition numbers for both test methods on esda.org before citing them in a spec, since they have been revised from earlier editions.
Known gotchas
A flooring product's standalone resistance-to-ground spec-sheet number is not the same as a facility-level STM97.1 test result — the facility test includes footwear and a person, which product data alone can't establish.
A 'conductive' or 'static-dissipative' flooring label alone does not satisfy S20.20 — compliance requires the combined-system test per STM97.1/STM97.2, verified on-site.
