Use E-Verify's Self Check service to let a job seeker confirm their own employment eligibility before starting a new job

Steps

1. Direct the individual to Self Check under myE-Verify — usage must be voluntary; an employer may never require an employee or applicant to use it.
2. Have the individual create or log in to a USCIS online account (myAccount), which requires passing an identity-authentication quiz before full myE-Verify features unlock.
3. Enter the requested identity information so Self Check can compare it against the same DHS and Social Security Administration records that employer-initiated E-Verify cases use.
4. If Self Check returns a mismatch, follow the provided instructions to correct records with the relevant federal agency (e.g. SSA for a name change, DHS for immigration status) before the individual is hired.
5. Treat a work-authorized Self Check result as informative only — it is not a credential and does not replace the employer's obligation to complete Form I-9 or run an actual E-Verify case at hire.
6. Do not use a Self Check result to pre-screen candidates before a job offer — conditioning an offer on providing Self Check results can violate the anti-discrimination provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
