Steps
Select investigation points per NFPA 25 Annex D guidance, typically a cross-main, a branch line, and a low point or trap in dry/preaction systems
Open selected fittings and visually inspect the interior for scale, tubercules, biofilm, sediment, foreign material, or MIC indicators
Where permitted, use a documented laboratory water-sample analysis program as an accepted alternative to physically opening piping
Photograph findings and measure any obstruction/sediment depth against the pipe diameter to determine if it constitutes a reportable obstruction
If obstruction or MIC is found, expand the investigation scope and report to the owner/AHJ per deficiency-reporting requirements
Reseal inspection openings and hydrostatically verify no leaks before returning the system to service
Known gotchas
A single clean investigation point does not clear the whole system -- NFPA 25 requires expanding the investigation if any point shows an obstruction condition
The standard has shifted from a rigid "open X fittings" prescription to a performance-based assessment of internal condition, so acceptable methodology (including lab water sampling) should be confirmed against the edition legally adopted by the local AHJ
MIC damage is often worst at low points and dead-ends in dry/preaction air-filled piping, not at the main -- checking only the riser and a cross-main can miss it entirely
