Steps

1. Identify every location where a roof slope terminates into a vertical sidewall at the bottom of a step-flashed run (common at dormers, chimneys-adjacent walls, and porch roof-to-wall junctions), since these are the specific points kick-out flashing addresses.
2. Install a kick-out (diverter) flashing piece that extends the step flashing outward at the bottom of the run, directing water away from the wall and into the gutter or off the roof edge, rather than letting the last step-flashing piece dump water directly behind the siding/trim.
3. Confirm the kick-out is properly integrated with the wall's water-resistive barrier/siding flashing sequence (installed so the WRB laps over the top of the kick-out) rather than simply caulked on afterward, since sequencing—not sealant—is what prevents wall water intrusion.
4. Verify the kick-out flashing is sized/angled to actually clear water into the gutter (or past the fascia) rather than just redirecting it slightly, which is a common installation failure that still allows wall damage over time.
5. Inspect existing kick-out details during a re-roof or wall-siding replacement, since missing kick-out flashing is a frequent cause of hidden wall rot found only when siding or roofing is opened up.
