Comply with California's Solar Consumer Protection Guide and CSLB solar disclosure requirements before a customer signs a contract

Steps

1. Confirm the current version of the CPUC Solar Consumer Protection Guide at cpuc.ca.gov/solarguide before the sales appointment, since the guide is periodically reissued in a new version
2. For any customer served by an investor-owned utility (PG&E, SCE, or SDG&E), provide and have the customer read and sign the CPUC guide before contract signature, and provide it in the customer's preferred language among those CPUC requires (e.g., Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Tagalog) if requested
3. Complete and provide the CSLB Solar Energy System Supporting Information disclosure document, including installation, financing/PPA/lease terms, and the required bill-savings estimate methodology (e.g., PVWatts-based estimates where applicable)
4. Confirm down-payment limits are respected (no more than the lesser of a fixed dollar cap or a percentage of contract price) and that no payment is collected for work not yet completed or materials not yet delivered
5. Disclose the customer's right to cancel the agreement within the applicable review period (a standard number of days, extended for customers over a specified age) before the customer commits, unless the sale was negotiated at the contractor's place of business
