Guide a building-service contractor (BSC) through the ISSA CIMS certification process

Steps

1. Obtain the current CIMS standard document and the CIMS certification overview from cims.issa.com to confirm the active edition and the five core certification elements (quality systems, service delivery, human resources, health/safety/environmental stewardship, and management commitment) before starting.
2. Conduct an internal gap assessment against every mandatory and recommended requirement in each section; do not assume prior familiarity with the standard is current, since CIMS has been revised over time.
3. Decide whether to self-certify or engage a CIMS Certified Expert (CCE) or ISSA-approved third-party certification body to conduct the on-site or remote assessment.
4. Assemble documentary evidence (written policies, training records, safety programs, customer communication procedures) mapped to each standard section and complete the assessment.
5. Confirm the certification result covers 100% of mandatory elements and at least 60% of recommended elements per section, since partial compliance does not qualify.
6. Maintain certification through the required interim/annual surveillance and full recertification cycle; check cims.issa.com for current renewal timing rather than assuming a fixed interval.
