Obtain the current CIMS standard document and self-assess against its core sections covering management structure, quality systems, service delivery, human resources, and health/safety/environmental stewardship
Confirm the organization meets 100% of mandatory elements and at least 60% of recommended elements within each section, per the published certification requirements
Assemble written documentation (policies, procedures, records) that demonstrates compliance with each requirement before scheduling an assessment
Engage an ISSA-accredited independent third-party assessor to review documentation and conduct an on-site assessment
Address any gaps identified by the assessor and resubmit evidence as required, then receive certification once compliance is confirmed
Plan for periodic recertification/renewal per ISSA's published CIMS certification renewal process
Known gotchas
Do not confuse mandatory vs. recommended elements — 100% mandatory compliance per section is non-negotiable even if overall recommended-element compliance exceeds 60%
The assessor must be ISSA-accredited; using a non-accredited consultant for the formal assessment will not result in valid certification
