Steps
Go to the NGS Survey Marks and Datasheets portal at ngs.noaa.gov/datasheets/ (or the interactive NGS Web Map at geodesy.noaa.gov/datasheets/ngs_map/) to search by PID, station name, or map location.
If you only have an approximate location, use the map interface to browse nearby marks, or use NGS Data Explorer (geodesy.noaa.gov/NGSDataExplorer/) for a GIS-style search and bulk export.
Retrieve the datasheet by PID and review the 'Current Survey Control' block for the published horizontal position (datum/realization noted, e.g. NAD 83(2011)) and the vertical value (e.g. NAVD 88 orthometric height), along with the last-condition/recovery date.
Read the 'Station Description' and 'To Reach' narrative sections carefully — these are the field recovery directions, and older marks may have outdated reference-object descriptions.
Cross-check the mark's most recent 'recovery' note (found/not found/destroyed) before planning fieldwork, since some published marks no longer exist on the ground.
Known gotchas
A published datasheet position does not guarantee the physical monument still exists — always check the most recent recovery note, and be prepared to submit your own recovery report if you visit it.
Datasheets may show superseded datum realizations for older marks; confirm which realization (e.g., NAD 83(2011) vs. an earlier adjustment) your project requires before using the published value.
PID-based search is the most reliable method; name-based search can return multiple similarly named stations in different states/counties.
