Steps
Visit wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/api and submit an email address to receive a free Access Code
Review the Highway Alerts documentation (wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/api/Documentation/group___highway_alerts.html) for the GetAlertsAsJson, GetAlertAsJson, and SearchAlertsAsJson operations
Call GetAlertsAsJson with the AccessCode parameter to retrieve all currently active statewide alerts (construction, incidents, closures) from WSDOT's ROADS system
Use SearchAlertsAsJson with StateRoute/Region/milepost parameters to scope results to a specific corridor
Separately note WSDOT's own WZDx v4.2 endpoints (wzdx.wsdot.wa.gov/api/v4/WorkZoneFeed and DeviceFeed) if WZDx-formatted data is specifically needed instead of the general alerts feed
Known gotchas
Every Highway Alerts REST call requires the AccessCode query parameter — there is no anonymous/unauthenticated access, though the code itself is free and self-service via email
Highway Alerts is WSDOT's general incident/alert feed (construction, collisions, weather closures, etc.), not scoped only to planned lane closures — filter by alert category/description rather than assuming every record is work-zone-related
This is a legacy WSDL/WCF-style service that also offers REST, RSS, and KML; the REST surface uses verbose, older-style query-string parameters rather than a modern JSON:API resource design
