Steps
Identify all gauges due, since each riser/gauge has its own 5-year clock from installation or last replacement/test
Either replace the gauge outright or test it by comparison against a known-calibrated reference gauge at the same point
Confirm the field gauge reads within 3% of full scale compared to the reference gauge across the test range
Replace any gauge that fails the 3% tolerance, is illegible, has a cracked lens, or is stuck
Record the comparison reading and gauge serial/date to reset the 5-year clock
Known gotchas
The 5-year clock runs per gauge, not per building -- staggered installation/replacement dates across a facility are easy for a single annual visit to miss
A gauge that looks plausible can still be out of tolerance; comparison testing against a calibrated reference is required, not just a visual read
A damaged or missing gauge blocks other required readings (e.g., the annual main drain test depends on an accurate gauge), so a bad gauge can cascade into a failed related test
