Steps
Confirm via the HCCH 'Current list of operational e-Registers' page that California is listed among U.S. states with an operational e-Register, linking to apostille-search.sos.ca.gov.
Navigate to apostille-search.sos.ca.gov and search using the certificate/identifying information printed on the apostille.
Confirm the returned issuance details (date, document type, certificate number) match the physical/PDF apostille before relying on it.
Note this is distinct from the general California Notary Public Listing bulk export — apostille validity and notary commission status are verified through separate CA SOS tools.
If the e-Register does not return a match, contact the CA Secretary of State's Notary Public Section for manual confirmation rather than assuming fraud.
Known gotchas
Do not confuse this apostille-specific verification tool with the general notary-public-listing bulk file — they serve different verification purposes and live at different subdomains.
Apostille e-Register availability can differ from apostille issuance date; older apostilles issued before the e-Register existed may not be retrievable electronically.
