Steps
Verify a new gauge kit is checked for accuracy before first use, and at minimum annually thereafter
Use a reference standard gauge with NIST-traceable calibration and a maximum permissible error of ±0.05 psig to verify the field kit
Confirm the field kit stays within the ±0.2 psid tolerance for decreasing differential-pressure readings at each test point
Recalibrate or replace the field kit immediately if it exceeds tolerance
Retain calibration records/certificates, since many purveyors require proof of current gauge calibration referenced on each submitted test report
Known gotchas
A gauge that looks fine visually can still be outside the ±0.2 psid tolerance — annual bench verification against a NIST-traceable reference is required, not just a zero check
Purveyors increasingly reject test reports that omit the gauge serial number and current calibration date — this is a common cause of report rejection
Reference/standard gauges used to check field kits have a tighter tolerance and their own calibration cycle (±0.05 psig, annual) — don't conflate the reference-gauge standard with the looser field-kit tolerance
