Steps
Email info@itreetools.org to negotiate a paid services contract and receive a unique per-user API key — this is a contract-gated service, not self-serve signup.
Collect required inputs per tree: species code, diameter at breast height (DBH), location, condition class, and crown light exposure (CLE, an input of 0-5 sides).
Submit tree records to the engine at api.itreetools.org (branded 'The Davey Tree Benefits Engine, powered by i-Tree') using your issued API key.
Read back ecosystem-benefit estimates (e.g. pounds of CO2 captured, gallons of stormwater intercepted) already converted to your chosen currency and unit system (metric or imperial).
Track usage against the per-tree fee (roughly $0.02 per tree) and reconcile against your API agreement's billing terms.
Known gotchas
This paid engine replaced the free National Tree Benefits Calculator (NTBC); there is no free production tier.
Crown light exposure (CLE) is a newly required input — records submitted without it will be incomplete or rejected, unlike the old calculator's static lookup tables.
Access is fully gated behind a sales conversation (info@itreetools.org); there's no public self-serve API key issuance or documentation portal for anonymous testing.
