Steps
Track the 3-year certification expiration date proactively so recertification is scheduled before lapse
Enroll in the 8-hour ASSE recertification class before the certificate expires
Pass the 50-question written exam and the hands-on practical exam
If already expired for 6 months or less, complete recertification within the grace period but do not perform tests during the lapse
If expired more than 6 months, retake the full 40-hour initial course rather than the shorter recert class
File the renewed certificate with each purveyor where the tester is registered
Known gotchas
ASSE's 6-month grace period is an administrative allowance from ASSE, not a guarantee that every local purveyor will accept test reports performed while the certificate was technically lapsed
Testing during the grace period, even though ASSE permits recert enrollment, can itself be a local compliance violation — check with each purveyor
Multiple state/purveyor registrations tied to the same certification may have their own renewal cycles that don't align with ASSE's 3-year cycle
