Confirm the local water purveyor/AHJ accepts ASSE 5110 (versus ABPA or a state-specific credential) before enrolling
Enroll in an ASSE-accredited 40-hour Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester course covering ASSE 5110 test procedures
Pass the 100-question written exam with a minimum score of 70%
Pass the hands-on practical exam, which includes testing ASSE 1013, 1015, 1020, and 1056 assemblies
Submit the certification application and fee to ASSE International; certificate is valid for a 3-year period
Register the new certification with each water purveyor/jurisdiction that requires proof before testing there
Known gotchas
ASSE 5110 alone does not equal a state license — Texas, Washington, and other states run their own separate exam/registration on top of, or instead of, ASSE 5110
Which certifying body a purveyor accepts varies; a tester certified only through ABPA may need a separate ASSE credential (or vice versa)
The practical exam covers specific assembly types (1013 DC, 1015 RP, 1020 PVB, 1056 fire); insufficient hands-on time on any one type is a common failure point
