Go to newjersey.mylicense.com/verification/ and select Business Search (or Individual Search) for 'Home Improvement Contractor'
Search by the contractor's 13VH######## registration number, business name, or owner name
Confirm the record shows an active status, current expiration date, and no unresolved disciplinary actions
Cross-check that the number displayed on the contractor's contract, invoice, or advertising matches the number returned by the lookup, since NJ law requires the DCA registration number on all such documents
If the lookup portal is unavailable, call the DCA License Verification line (973-504-6200 or 800-242-5846) as a fallback
Note the regulatory transition in progress: New Jersey's Home Improvement and Home Elevation Contractor Licensing Act (P.L. 2023, c.237) will eventually replace HIC registration with a true license issued by a new State Board, but as of mid-2026 that Board has not finished promulgating rules, so the existing mylicense.com HIC registration lookup remains the operative verification system
Known gotchas
Do not assume New Jersey has already switched to full contractor licensure — as of this writing (2026) the new State Board of Home Improvement and Home Elevation Contractors was only partially seated and its rules were not yet finalized; the individual licensing mandate is inoperative until six months after those rules are published
New continuing-education requirements for the incoming licensure system took effect February 1, 2026 even though the underlying license requirement has not yet triggered — do not conflate 'training requirement is live' with 'licensing requirement is live'
This is a distinct dataset/route from NYC's HIC license check (already in corpus) — NJ DCA registration is a separate state-level system covering all of New Jersey, not NYC-specific
