Steps

  1. POST to the portal's /sharing/rest/generateToken endpoint over HTTPS with username, password, a client/referer value, and f=json
  2. Read the returned token and expires timestamp from the JSON response
  3. GET the target layer's FeatureServer/{layerId}/query endpoint with where, outFields, f=json, and the token as parameters
  4. Renew the token before it expires and reuse the same client/referer value used at generation time
