Steps

1. Confirm the discipline you need: 40 CFR 745.225(c)(6) sets different initial-course-length minimums for each discipline (inspector, risk assessor, supervisor, abatement worker, project designer, renovator, dust sampling technician), while 40 CFR 745.225(d) separately lists the required curriculum topics for each discipline — don't apply one discipline's hour requirement or topic list to another.
2. For the abatement worker discipline, enroll in an EPA-accredited (or EPA-authorized-State/Tribal-program-accredited) initial course meeting the 40 CFR 745.225(c)(6)(v) minimum of 16 training hours, including at least 8 hours of hands-on training activities; the required curriculum topics for the worker course are listed in 40 CFR 745.225(d)(5).
3. If you instead need the supervisor discipline, confirm the initial course is a minimum of 32 training hours with at least 8 hours hands-on, per 40 CFR 745.225(c)(6)(iii); the required curriculum topics for the supervisor course are listed in 40 CFR 745.225(d)(3).
4. Before enrolling, verify the training provider's current accreditation status directly with EPA's Lead-Based Paint Program (or your State/Tribal program's equivalent, in jurisdictions that run their own EPA-authorized lead program), since accreditation can lapse or transfer between providers.
5. After completing the course and passing any required exam, obtain your discipline-specific certification through your State/Tribal program (or the EPA-administered program in jurisdictions without an authorized program) before performing abatement work; individuals are certified pursuant to 40 CFR 745.226, not 745.225.
6. Track your certification's expiration and refresher-training requirements so it doesn't lapse mid-project: per 40 CFR 745.225(e)(2), refresher courses for the worker and supervisor disciplines each last a minimum of 8 training hours and must include a hands-on component.
