Steps
Determine the required certification type: Type I (small appliances, ≤5 lb refrigerant), Type II (high-pressure appliances), Type III (low-pressure appliances), or Universal (all three, requiring passing all corresponding exams).
Pass the Core exam plus at least one Type exam — there are no prerequisites to sit for the exam.
Take the exam only through an EPA-approved certifying organization (e.g., ESCO Institute, HVAC Excellence, NATE, ACCA) — EPA itself does not administer exams or issue cards directly.
Receive the physical, credit-card-sized certification card from the certifying organization; EPA does not recognize home-printed or purely digital cards as valid proof.
To verify a specific technician, use that technician's issuing certifying organization's own verification tool (e.g., NATE's lookup by NATE ID) — there is no single unified EPA public database covering every certifying organization.
Known gotchas
Section 608 certification does not expire once earned — do not build renewal-reminder logic assuming periodic recertification.
