Steps

1. Identify the refrigerant charge size of appliances you'll service: Type I certification covers 'small appliances' — factory-sealed units containing 5 lbs or less of refrigerant (e.g., most household refrigerators, freezers, window/room air conditioners, dehumidifiers)
2. Only pursue Type II, Type III, or Universal certification if your work will also include larger commercial/residential-HVAC systems outside the small-appliance category
3. Take the Core section plus the Type I specialty exam through an EPA-approved certifying organization; Type I exams are commonly open-book
4. Confirm there is no expiration on Section 608 technician certification once issued, so renewal is not required, but keep your card/records accessible for authorized-servicer applications that ask for it
5. If your business also handles larger built-in refrigeration or central A/C work, evaluate whether Universal certification is more efficient than stacking individual type exams
