Steps
Generate a random API key (8-128 hex characters) and host it as {key}.txt at your site root to prove domain ownership
Confirm the key file is served with a 200 status and its contents match the key used in submissions
POST a JSON payload with host, key, and up to 10,000 urlList entries to a single participating endpoint
Understand that hitting one participating engine's endpoint propagates the notification to all other IndexNow-participating engines (Bing, Yandex, Seznam.cz, Naver)
Handle 200/202 (accepted) vs 400/403/422/429 responses to detect malformed keys, missing key files, or rate limiting
Known gotchas
Google does not participate in IndexNow - you still need Search Console/sitemaps for Google discovery
The key file must remain hosted at the same path indefinitely; removing it can invalidate future submissions
IndexNow only notifies engines that content changed - it does not guarantee crawling or ranking
