Ask for the technician's PHTA Certified Service Technician (CST) certificate/number; PHTA describes CST as requiring roughly two years of industry experience.
Confirm the certification is current — PHTA's non-CPO certifications (CST, CSP, CPI, CHTT, CBP tiers) run on a three-year cycle requiring 24 PHTA continuing-education hours to renew.
Check whether the technician's state or local jurisdiction layers its own government service-technician licensing requirement on top of (or instead of) this private PHTA credential.
For more advanced service credentials, ask whether the technician also holds PHTA's Certified Service Professional (CSP), described by PHTA as requiring about five years of experience and sitting above CST on its Service Pathway.
Known gotchas
PHTA certifications are private trade credentials, not government licenses — confirming a valid CST does not by itself confirm the person or business is a state-licensed contractor where the state separately requires one.
PHTA does not track a member's continuing-education completion for them and has no public expiration lookup; ask to see the actual certificate/expiration date rather than assuming a certification is still valid.
