Steps

1. Confirm the installed grease filters are listed and tested to UL 1046 (Grease Filters for Exhaust Ducts)
2. Confirm the filters are baffle-type (or another listed rigid construction) — mesh-type grease filters are not permitted under NFPA 96
3. Verify filters are installed at an angle of not less than 45 degrees from horizontal, are easily removable for cleaning, and are positioned with adequate distance from the cooking surface (commonly cited around 18 in., with roughly 4 ft required where used with charcoal-type broilers)
4. Confirm filters have a drip tray pitched to drain into a small (roughly 1-gallon capacity) metal container, and that filters requiring a specific orientation are marked so they cannot be installed backward
5. Reject any filter that distorts, crushes, or otherwise fails under normal handling/cleaning, and confirm a steel/stainless steel baffle plate separates the heat source from the grease removal device
