Steps
Obtain the current AWWA C654 standard (2021 edition, C654-21) from AWWA's store or ANSI webstore — it is a purchased standard, not a free online document
Follow the standard's disinfection sequence in order: gravel pack (if present), well casing, pump and appurtenant piping
Account for pH and temperature when calculating chlorine dose/contact time, since both affect disinfectant efficacy per the standard
After the disinfection and required contact period, flush the well and appurtenances until residual chlorine is dissipated to acceptable levels before collecting a bacteriological sample
Submit the post-disinfection water sample to a state-accredited lab for bacteriological clearance before the well is placed back into service
