Steps
Determine the required churn-test frequency: weekly for diesel-driven pumps, monthly for electric-driven pumps
Start the pump per its normal automatic or manual start sequence and let it run at no-flow (churn) condition
Run electric pumps a minimum of 10 minutes and diesel pumps a minimum of 30 minutes, recording suction/discharge pressure, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and battery voltage on diesel units
Verify jockey pump cut-in/cut-out pressures and confirm the fire pump does not start unless jockey pressure drops below its setpoint
Log results and flag deviations (low battery voltage, excessive cranking time) for corrective action
Known gotchas
Remote/automated churn testing only satisfies the requirement under a documented program meeting NFPA 25's remote-testing provisions -- an unattended test outside that program does not count
A diesel engine that starts and idles fine at churn can still fail to reach governed speed under load; churn alone doesn't substitute for the annual flow test
Outdoor or unheated pump houses in cold climates still need the full-season churn schedule -- cold-soak conditions don't suspend the required frequency
